A prickly pear cactus is common in The desert areas and here in Amarillo. It was a challenging subject to capture in a cyanotype. Who knew that it's not the large spikes you have to watch out for but the many tiny ones! Hand coloured to accentuate the spikes, this cyanotype reflects the beauty of this prickly plant.
Prickly Pear Cyanotype
This cyanotype was created on cotton twill and is stretched like a canvas. This horizontal piece is 8 inches wide by 10 inches high. It is framed and ready to hang. Like any fine art, cyanotypes are sensitive to direct sunlight so you'll need to hang it where the sun doesn't shine on it. It's kind of ironic because sun shining on it is what creates the image in the first place.
